The Nightmare was written around 1989 - 1990 for posting material on rec.arts.poetry.   It was originally without a title, as were all the poems that I wrote during that time, and the name was added after one of the readers asked me what the name of the poem was supposed to be.

                         THE NIGHTMARE

It's stormy
  I'm alone
    and drowning
the waves wash over me
  I go under
    again.

  It's dark
    I'm lost
      and running
the trees reach out to grab me
    I fall down
      again.

    It's high
      I'm cold
        and falling
the ground reaches up to embrace me
      I black out
        again.

      It's night
        I'm afraid
          and sweating
She reaches over to comfort me
        I relax and fall asleep
          again...
