HTML
I have at least made the attempt to ensure that the html used within this site is bog standard. At the very least, the site should pass the html verifier without too many complaints. (ok, so I have make a few html abuses, but we will ignore that for the moment). This allows the site to be viewed under all web browsers (especially the text mode browsers) without any trouble.

The real magic is in the use of stylesheets which allows the separation of content and design. It also makes for smaller page sizes and therefor, faster downloads and access times.

Comment Server
Philip Greenspun as gratiously provided the ability to add comments to the static web pages using the Loquacious comment server. Phil provides this service and other services for Web Developers as services as part of his Free Services for Web developers using the Arsdigita Community System toolkit.

If you would like to learn more about this powerful toolkit for building high availability, high traffic, dynamic web sites, please look at arsdigita.com, photo.net and the Web Tools Review for more information.

Book Links
In Association with Amazon.com In Association with Amazon.com
Amazon.com provides one the best services for ordering books. The ability to read reviews before making the decision to purchase a book as well as having the convenience of having the books delivered directly to me means that I seldom have to go to a book store to hunt down the books that I want to buy (ok, I still do that in case something interesting catches my eye).

Once side benefit of displaying the links on my site is that they will give me a small kickback for every book you purchase going through my links. Right on!

Oh, you want to do the same and get your own kickbacks? Check out the Amazon.com Associate Program and become a member.

Domain information
I have registered two domains, quagmyre.com and pdwalker.net. The first domain, which is the one that I use for addressing this site is actually hosted by Domain Direct. The pdwalker.net domain is the domain that I registered when I rented a vserver from vservers.com. I use the URL forwarding feature of Domain Direct DNS service and point the quagmyre.com domain at pdwalker.net (which becomes very obvious when you look at the URL's. One of these days, I will get around to moving the domain to somewhere real.

These are not necessarily the best services now available for registering domains, but at the time, they were the ones that I used.

Hosting Server
This web site is hosted by vservers.com. For a small monthly fee, they provide a virtual server running BSDi on their host machine. The virtual server gives you access to almost the real machine. They provide a range of services depending on your needs. Not a bad way to have your site hosted if you do not have access, or do not wish to maintain your own server. Since I am only hosting a static site, I have chosen their vserver lite option.

Web Server
Apache : This server is not the fastest, but it is certainly one of the best. Apache is a well maintained, well understood web server that is continuing it's development through a group of dedicated developers. As of the time of this writing, well over half of the web servers on the internet use Apache.

Web Development Tools
Macromedia Dreamweaver & Vim are the tools used to generate this web site. Dreamweaver provides the ease of GUI editing and gvim handles the sticky bits. This combination works better than FrontPage 98/2000 in my opinion.

Vim? What can I say? It's vi on steroids. It annoys Emacs users (reason enough to use vi!) It's powerful, it's fast, it's open source, it's free, and whatever computer you choose to use, it's probably there (or at least vi is anyway) and as a bonus, it's an established religion with a long history of holy wars!

I keep of Vim related information here.

Another valuable tool that is well worth considering is Macromedia Fireworks. This tool has many features, but the best tool in this package allows you to optimize the size of your graphic images allowing to you get the smallest size with your images and maintain the best quality possible. Both Macromedia packages can be purchased online.

Screen Fonts
Microsoft has released a set of True Type screen fonts that have been designed for making it easier to read text on your computer screen. The fonts that I like best in this set are Georgia and Verdana. If you do not have thse fonts I recommend that you download and try them to see the difference they make for the legibility of your text.

(Someday, if we are lucky, Microsoft will release the cleartype technology as part of the font rendering driver under Windows so that those of us with LCD screen will see much clearer text displays.)
